Recessed lights consist of two elements: trim and housing. Recessed housing is installed out of eyesight above the ceiling and can be designed for either new construction or remodel (old construction) application. Further, recessed housings may be either rated by a certification organization such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for insulation contact (IC) or non-IC use. Some may be airtight or rated for wet or damp locations. They're typically available in lighting platforms such as LED, incandescent halogen and fluorescent CFL. Note that luminaires and housings are subject to increasingly vigorous standards mandated by local code. Most notably, California's Title 24 calls for "adaptive lighting" (lighting that uses photo sensors or dimmers when not in use) and higher efficacy fixtures. Florida requires the use of IC rated and air tight new construction housing. Other states and municipalities may have similar requirements.
